Initial Assessment

All new customers are required to book an initial assessment; this is typically a 45-60 minute consultation involving both assessment and treatment.  Consent will be obtained prior to a full medical history of the current and concurrent/past  problems; this will be followed by an objective assessment of the problem area.  The physio will discuss their findings and provide a clinically reasoned interpretation of the presentation/diagnosis.  Treatment options will be discussed and based on a patient centered approach and evidence based practice, an appropriate and effective treatment plan using a range of modalities and related to personalised goals will be agreed.  Follow up treatments are typically 30 minutes long and progress will be continuously evaluated and outcomes monitored to ensure effective treatment.

Should physiotherapy be inappropriate or the physio feel further investigation is required you will be informed of the best course of action.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy helps maintain and restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability.  It can be used in isolation or conjunction with other medical management.  Physiotherapists combine their knowledge and skills to a range of physical problems.  They take a holistic approach assessing the body as a whole and ensuring the person being treated is directly involved in their own care.  Physiotherapists use a wide range of treatment techniques to restore physical function and full performance of the body.

Pilates

Pilates

Clinical pilates aims to strengthen the body mentally and physically to improve general fitness and well-being.  Whilst providing a complete body workout, pilates assesses the movement and control of the lower back/spine.  It focuses on building your body's core strength via your abdominal, back and pelvic muscles through a series of low repetitions, low impact stretching and conditioning exercises. This is done by re-training the brain to recruit the correct muscle and produce the right movement patterns.  Pilates is tailor made to provide a safe and fun form of exercise to all ages and level of ability and fitness.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is used as a combined approach to the management of pain and inflammation for many conditions by stimulating the body's own healing processes to aid recovery and enhance rehabilitation.  It aims to restore the body to a state of balance/homeostasis both physically and mentally.  Very fine needles are placed in to specifically chosen acupuncture points to stimulate the flow of Qi in body channels/meridians.  Qi may have been disrupted for many reasons e.g. injury, infection which can cause symptoms e.g. pain, weakness, stress.  By creating a small trauma with a needle at local, distal and supraspinal levels, blood flow is increased, nerve endings stimulated within the skin and muscles and chemicals released.  This reduces pain, promotes natural healing and enhances the effects of other physiotherapy treatment being provided with very minimal side effects.

Manual Therapy

Manual Therapy

Manual therapy is a technique in which physiotherapists use their hands to mobilise, manipulate and massage the body tissues.  Techniques can be used for multiple issues to reduce pain and stiffness, to facilitate and increase normal movements of the spine, peripheral joints and muscles, improve blood circulation, promote relaxation, assist fluid drainage and improve function.

Massage

Massage is the management, manipulation and rehabilitation of soft tissues of the body including muscles, tendons and ligaments.  It can relieve day to day problems, guard against or aid injury recovery and assist sport performers.  It is tailored to meet individual needs by the use of a variety of techniques; these can help with circulation, swelling, muscle tone, muscle length, pain, re-modelling scar tissue and removal of metabolic waste to improve the efficiency of the musculoskeletal system.

Breast Care

Breast Care involves the ability to deliver graded, targeted, appropriate and safe exercise programmes which will help clients to recover range of movement, mobility and strength compromised by breast cancer treatment.  An in depth knowledge of breast cancer etiology, stages and treatment allow good client interaction to set realistic expectations and goals.  Understanding the surgical effects of different types of reconstruction, surgery and adjuvant therapies enables physiotherapy to hone in on specific muscle groups requiring attention and exercises and movement patterns which should be avoided, as well as accommodate the psychological effects and provide support.  Exercise and pilates based exercise has been proven to beneficially improve multiple breast cancer outcomes.
